In the words of the Irish president Michael D. Higgins: “Working the plough is a genius that, as a migratory people, we have taken across the world, enriching other peoples and other lands.”

While day two of the National Ploughing Championships may have been called off, Tuesday was just like the day we’ve all come to expect at the Ploughing. Some 97,500 people came through the gates on day one, including the various presidential hopefuls and some famous faces.

A downpour at 3pm did little to stop people in their tracks but by 8pm on Tuesday evening wind speeds picked up as Storm Ali approached.

The high wind speeds made Wednesday a disappointing visit for most but the competitors in the fields stuck to the true business of the day and ploughed on.
