There is some variability in sheep sale reports in recent days. Some mart managers are reporting a solid trade but many are pointing to a slightly easier trade, with prices easing by anywhere from €1/head to €3/head.

The appetite from factory agents for lambs is strong but with high numbers on hand and some weakening in factory quotes, agents have been more cautious.

The general run of prices for lambs weighing 46kg to 50kg ranges from €114 to €120. Top-quality ewe lambs suitable for breeding and butcher-type lambs are in cases securing a premium, with top prices rising intermittently to €125 or higher.

Lambs weighing 42kg to 45kg are trading in recent days from €103 to €115, with flesh cover having a significant effect on prices secured, while lighter lots weighing 39kg to 41kg are trading from €95 to €104 on average.

Many sales recorded significantly higher numbers of store lambs on offer which in cases slightly diluted competition.

Medium-weight ewes range from €90 to €105, while light carcase ewes range from €75 to €85

Good lowland lambs weighing 36kg to 38kg are selling from €82 to €90, while lighter lots weighing 32kg to 35kg are selling from €70 to €84. Crossbred types are €4/head to €8/head lower depending on quality, while similarly, well-matched store ewe lambs with breeding potential are capable of securing a similar premium.

The cull ewe trade is firm. Large-framed heavy fleshed ewes are selling in the main from €115 to €125 but €5 to €10 more is being paid in cases. Medium-weight ewes range from €90 to €105, while light carcase ewes range from €75 to €85.

There is continued demand for feeding ewes. Lowland ewes with a good mouth and feet and capable of doing a good thrive selling from €70 to €85.
