A lot of my neighbours were upset about the low-cost loans not coming out. I also think the government could have brought in more schemes for young farmers to try to entice them into farming.

I’m a widow farming with my son and I thought the €5/week increase in social welfare payments was very nice, but I’m very disappointed the Living Alone allowance wasn’t increased. When your partner dies your income is cut in half and the allowance should have been upped.
Conor Murphy, dairy farmer
I think they could have lessened the tax on the price of diesel for farmers. It’s an awful hit to the farmers’ pockets when you’re going through two or three fills of it in one year. The tax is the hardest burden for farmers.
William Fitzgerald, suckler farmer
I’m very disappointed we didn’t get the €200/cow and that we only got €40/cow, and we won’t get that until next year.
It’s very hard to keep going at present, because it was an awful bad year. We’re thinking of getting rid of sucklers and just keeping beef cattle.
