EXPLORE the National Museum of Ireland in Castlebar, Co Mayo. From 19 July to 31 July, the museum is exhibiting some of the objects gathered as part of the RTÉ television programme National Treasures – A Peoples’ Archive. The cultural and social history of Ireland’s four provinces is evident in these pieces, which were sourced by the public and chosen for exhibition through social media platforms. ESCAPE to Donegal this weekend to the Milford and District Adventure Race, where you can take on the 29km sprint on Saturday 21 July at Moyle View Park. The course starts with a 5km fast run followed by a 1km kayak, 22km cycle and 1km run. Or, if you are feeling brave, you can embark upon the ultimate 59km challenge. TASTE some of Ireland’s favourite fowl at Bray Harbour’s Food Fest from 20 July to 22 July. Back to Wicklow due to popular demand, this summer’s festival launches with an evening of chicken wings and rocking music. The fully booked wing-eating competitions return, along with over 30 street stalls and craft markets. There is something for every member of the family, with a seafront fun fair and live DJ spinning top anthems all weekend. Entry to the event is free.

EMBRACE the Fairytale Festival in Woodstock Gardens, Co Kilkenny. On Sunday 22 July, the annual screen-free day out for all the family takes place. Enjoy storytelling, fairy trails, sing-a-longs, arts and crafts, archery, bouncy castles, food stalls and so much more. The picturesque location is made up of restored Victorian gardens that overlook the River Nore valley. Last year over 3,000 people attended the event and this year, the organising team has been working harder than ever to preserve the festival’s magic. Admission is €10 per person, with children under two years going free.

DOCUMENT your life with the Guth Gafa documentary festival in Co Meath. Ireland’s largest independent documentary festival takes place at the stunning 18th century Headfort House and grounds. The festival hosts award-winning international and Irish films, live music and great food. Now in its 12th year, the event is recognised both in Ireland and abroad for bringing award-winning, critically acclaimed films and filmmakers to rural audiences. There is also an entertainment tent with live music each night, gourmet food and craft beer. Ticket prices range from €5 to €12.
