GLAS meadows will be available for mowing on 1 July and, with the warm weather set to continue, the availability of hay and silage should increase over the next few weeks. In a normal year, this surge in supply would flood the market, but this is not expected this year, as farmers are being forced to feed silage during the dry spell as grass growth stalls.

Round 4x4s are averaging at €25 to €30 per bale across the country, with the highest price quoted at €35/bale in the south. Small square bales remain steady at €3 to €4.

Large square bales (8x4x3) of haylage are being quoted at €60/bale.

The average price for silage is €26 to €28 per bale.
