There have been no cases of bluetongue detected in the Republic of Ireland, the Department of Agriculture has confirmed to the Irish Farmers Journal.

It comes after a heifer imported from France to Northern Ireland was detected with Bluetongue last week. There is no deemed “outbreak” as the disease has not been found to be circulating in the wider cattle population. A total of 3,258 cattle imported into Ireland have been tested by the Department to date this year.

Surveillance is also underway in factories. Sampling takes place at the end of the vector period which is November/December.
