The European Commission has no transitional arrangements prepared in the event of the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) not being in place on time for its run period from 2021 to 2027.

Following a decision by the European Parliament not to vote on a position for the next CAP until after the European elections in May, there were concerns its implementation could be delayed.

However, European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan said he did not see the need for a transitional arrangement as he felt there was still sufficient time to get the reforms over the line.

He would be satisfied with having a settled text in place from the parliament’s agricultural committee for new MEPs to debate after the elections. The committee will vote on its position in April.
