There have been calls for the Department of Agriculture to introduce a fodder scheme to support farmers struggling to buy fodder and feed to last the winter.

Despite a fodder action group meeting between senior Department and Teagasc officials and farm organisations in Sligo on Monday, there has been no indication that a scheme will be introduced before Christmas.

Our correspondent Adam Woods was at an ICSA fodder crisis meeting in Cavan on Tuesday and heard from farmers, but started by asking ICSA secretary Eddie Punch what the feeling was among farmers at the meeting.

Recently retired dairy farmer, now beef farmer, Richard Blennerhassett from Co. Limerick, talks about his cross compliance inspection. Blennerhassett told the Irish Farmers Journal that the inspector was very strict on issues around spraying and that the inspector informed him the Department of Agriculture were targeting dairy farmers which is why he’d been chosen.
