There has been a 60% increase in Belted Galloways in Ireland since 2014, according to Ronan Delany of the Irish Belted Galloway Club. Between 2014 and 2016 pedigree stock of the breed was up 40%, he said. “This has increased 10% each year since then, a 60% increase since 2014.”

He also said that there are now 1,700 Belted Galloways in Ireland from 100% purebred Galloway stock.

Meanwhile, Euro Farm Foods is offering a bonus on Belted Galloway cattle processed through its plant in Duleek, Co Meath. It requires a minimum of four to five finished Belted Galloways per week.

For heifers and steers under 30 months it will offer 20c/kg bonus above the base price, plus quality assurance (QA), provided they meet the usual QA criteria. Animals over 30 months will be offered 10c/kg above base price with no QA.
