With the main calving season around the corner, Herefords were the most visible breed among the 250 calves on offer at Bandon Mart on Monday. Not far behind were Friesian and Angus-crosses.

Trade was very similar to the same time last year. Most of the beef breed crosses were sold in the €150 to €300 price range.

This export-type Friesian bull calf born on 4 January 2019 sold for €65.

However, younger calves or those from Jersey-cross herds were selling below this price bracket.

Friesian bull calves made between €50 and €135 for export-type calves, while the stronger Friesian bulls were making up to €200.

This Hereford bull born on 23 November 2018 sold for €300.

Traditional beef-bred-cross bull calves sold for between €165 and €330, with heifers of these breeds selling for between €120 and €350.

Continentals were scarce but in good demand, with heifers selling for up to €400 and continental bulls up to €370.

This light Angus heifer born 4 January 2019 sold for €125.
