Livestock and tillage farmers are being urged to develop mutually beneficial fodder supply arrangements. Last week, Dairygold announced a pilot programme to match tillage farmers with livestock farmers for supply of fodder. The co-op aims to utilise the co-op structure to allay fears of non-payment or non-delivery by both parties.

Glanbia also intends to facilitate a similar initiative and has issued a text message this week to farmers.

Elsewhere, in a meeting held in Kilkenny last Tuesday, Teagasc brought both tillage and livestock farmers together to discuss the potential for fodder production agreements. The emphasis was placed on developing mutual beneficial agreements and overcoming the trust issue.

Teagasc is developing an inter-farm fodder trading contract, based on its maize silage contact, which can be used for a number of forage crops including beet.
