A Limousin bred heifer sold to a record breaking price of £9,200 at the third RUAS Beef and Lamb Championships held at the Eikon Exhibition Centre on Tuesday.

Owned by Dermot Small, Kilkeel in partnership with Aberdeen based Blair Duffton, the sale topping heifer had been awarded reserve supreme champion earlier, and surpassed the top price of £5,300 at the 2019 championships.

Sired by a Limousin from a British Blue dam, the June 2018 born animal weighed 786kg and heads to Co Louth.

Supreme champion

The supreme champion was awarded to the McCrea family, Strabane, for their August 2019 born heifer, also sired by Limousin from a Blue cow. As the last lot to be sold, the champion saw the hammer fall at £6,100.

Earlier in the sale, the Housewife’s champion heifer, forwarded by James Alexander, Randalstown, realised £5,000.

His noted Jalex herd had a successful outing with other prize winning heifers commanding £7,100, £4,500 and £4,100.

The champion calf was awarded to Michelle Wright, Carnlough. This Limousin bred heifer, born March 2020 and weighing 318kg, sold for £4,000.

Bullocks sold to £2,750 for a Charolais bred animal for Mssrs Hyslop and McElroy, Dromara.
