An open information evening is being held for northwest tillage farmers on 6 June in Newtowncunningham, Co Donegal.

The event, which kicks off at 5pm, will hear from members of the seed trade on cereal variety options for growers and will feature a walk-through of winter barley and winter hybrid rye plots, which were planted in Drumbuoy last autumn.

The event will also focus on soil health and cover crop types and establishment, which can be challenging in the northwest.

With harvest just weeks away, the event will also hear from the grain trade on how grain markets are shaping up for the season ahead.

There will also be an update on the Northwest Energy Park project.

The Donegal tillage event will take place on 6 June.

  • Assemble at the winter barley and hybrid winter rye variety field plots from 4.30pm.
  • Cereal variety manager with Goldcrop John Dunne and Seedtech technical director Tim O'Donovan will go through the winter barley and winter hybrid rye varieties sown in the plots and discuss variety options for northwest growers.
  • Irish Farmers Journal tillage editor Siobhán Walsh and Precision Nutrition managing director Robbie Byrne will discuss cover crop options, establishment and soil health.
  • Comex McKinnon commodity trader Cian Maguire will discuss grain market prospects for the upcoming harvest and beyond.
  • Update on the Northwest Energy Park project.
  • BBQ and refreshments.

    • Attendees are advised to gather from 4.30pm onwards, with the event set to start at 5pm sharp in the variety plot.

    The event is being held with the support of Seedtech, Goldcrop and Clonleigh Co-op.
