Farm food producer Gubbeen Farm has been granted planning permission for an anaerobic digestion plant on its premises near Schull, Co Cork.

Gubbeen Farm, which produces a range of cheese and meats, will use whey from the cheese plant, pig and cattle slurry, and grass silage as feedstock.

The biogas will be combusted in a 50kWe combined heat and power plant to generate electricity and heat for the farm. The digestate will be separated into liquid and solids through a screw press.

Gubbeen Farm’s project was one of three selected to take part in the Irish Bioenergy Association Small Biogas Demonstration Project.
