New farm health campaign launched

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots has launched the ‘Protecting the Asset that is You’ campaign, which will deliver health messages to farmers and their families in a series of ‘Focus on Health’ weeks over the next five months.

The campaign is funded by DAERA’s Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation (TRPSI) fund and delivered through Rural Support and the Farm Family Health Check Programme (FFHCP).

The series will begin on 17 August with ‘Care in the Sun’.

Wool petition

An online petition which calls on government to use British wool products in a new home insulation scheme, and also for insulation and carpeting in public building projects, was nearing its target of 25,000 signatures by Wednesday of this week.

Supported by various farming organisations across the UK, the petition was launched in response to some farmers dumping this year’s clip due to low prices.

“I cannot urge everyone enough, the farming community and the general public, to sign this petition to prevent such a useful product going to waste. We are all working towards a greener world and wool is a natural, sustainable and environmentally friendly product” said the chair of the UFU hill farming committee, Nigel McLaughlin.

The plan is to deliver the signatures by hand to British Chancellor Rishi Sunak at No. 11 Downing Street.

Growing potato sales in NI

The latest figures from consumer research company Kantar, show that the NI potato packing sector has grown by 3.9% over the last year.

Sales totalled £50.83m, with volumes up 8.5% to over 60,000t. However, the average price per kilo is down to average 82p, for the year ending 30 June 2020.

Commenting on the figures, Lewis Cunningham from Wilson’s Country said that consumption has been strong since the start of the year, and that lockdown measures due to coronavirus have encouraged more people to cook from home.
